People’s Daily

September 18, 1966

Many young children around the country have been inspired by the teachings of our great leader, Mao Tse-Tung, and have become Red Guards to further the communist cause.  Exactly one month ago, a million Red Guards from around the country gathered in Tiananmen Square in Beijing to rally in support of Chairman Mao’s edict to “smash the old world.”

The Four Olds, which are Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas, of the “exploiting class” are interfering with the progress of our society’s goals.  The Red Guards, with the aid and guidance from Mao, have begun to rid our country of the Four Olds.  Anything resembling these bad habits has been rightfully destroyed.  Anyone obstructing Mao’s vision for our country has been labeled as a counter-revolutionary, publicly humiliated, and will be eradicated if they do not adapt to the new and better ways of thinking.

Everyone should carry their Red Book with pride and not only read, but implement the wisdom of Mao.  We should all post signs and supporting slogans in our neighborhoods and make all stores and buildings centers for the teaching of Mao Tse-Tung Thought.  We should also rid our country of counter-revolutionaries just as the Red Guards have done.

Look up to the Red Guards as role models and to Mao Tse-Tung as a leader!

Gang of Four Arrested, Marking End of Revolution

Picture
October 1976

It has been 10 years since the start of this revolution, and it is finally coming to a close. For some time now, the momentum of the revolution has been gradually slowing down. There have been less and less acts promoting it. Chairman Mao’s death in September certainly impacted the revolution, and it almost succeeded in stopping it in its tracks.

The Gang of Four, consisting of Jiang Qing (Mao’s widow), Zhang Chun Qiao, Yao Wen Yuan, and Wang Hong Wen, fought to keep the revolution alive, even with Mao gone. This group was very notorious for their cruel acts (including false accusations of intellectuals, public humiliations, etc.) They often sent thousands of innocents to labor camps in the countryside for no significant reason, and ordered for the execution of many other people. Because of this, they were strongly despised by both commoners and intellectuals.

On October 6, 1976, Hua Guo Feng (Communist Party Chairman, successor of Mao) ordered for the arrest of the Gang of Four in Beijing, China.

The arrest of the four led to numerous celebratory acts across the country. Huge parades and celebrations were held outside, in streets and parks. Music blared, food was served, fireworks set.

Each member of the Gang of Four will have a trial in court. Their arrest marks the official end to this disastrous revolution.
